CENTRAL ACEH

Central Aceh, as the name suggests, extends along the middle of Aceh, covering scenic mountain ranges. The capital of Central Aceh is Takengon. This area is popular for its internationally known Arabica coffee. Most of the land in Central Aceh is mostly hilly which is perfect for growing coffee, fruits and vegetables.

GETTING THERE

It is possible to get to Takengon from both Banda Aceh and Medan.
From Medan, take a bus from Pinang Baris bus terminal going direct to Takengon. The journey takes at least 10 hours.
A bus from Banda Aceh will take between five to six hours.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Lake Laut Tawar

One of the main attractions of this region is Lake Laut Tawar which is located near Takengon. It is a beautiful lake, tucked beneath soaring cliffs which are suitable for rock climbing. The lake is well-stocked with fish, which attracts fishermen especially during the holiday periods. There is a road that runs around the lake providing nice views.

Hot spring pool

The hot springs are at Simpang Balek, about 14km from Takengon. Anyone can go to the hot springs which are separate for men and women. Local people believe that the water can cure certain kinds of skin disease.

Coffee Plantations

In Central Aceh there are a couple of places where you can see how coffee is processed. In Pondok Gajah there is a coffee centre where visitors can enjoy the coffee gardens and follow the process. Batu Lintang is another place to go if you are interested in agro-tourism. In this area visitors can see how Javanese who were moved to this region took on coffee growing to support their families.

Caves

The caves in Central Aceh are not only popular for their interesting stalactites and stalagmites but also because of their legends. The most famous of these caves is Loyang Koro Cave, on the side of the lake, a short walk from the Hotel Renggali. The cave has been fitted with lights to help visitors see inside it better. For those who wish to enter deeper into the cave they must bring their own equipment.

Next to Loyang Koro is Loyang Pukes cave. This cave is not very deep so it is not possible to go inside.

Loyang Putri Ijo cave can be found next to Hotel Renggali. The local people believe that this cave was the home of Putri Ijo, a young lady who was transformed into a huge snake.

Further away, about 45km from Takengon, Loyang Datu cave can be found. This cave is also popular for its legend. Local people believe that before marriage the bride and bridegroom should bathe in the cave before the wedding ceremony for good luck.
